Virginia Woolf was kind of my hero. Not because she walked into a river with rocks in her pockets - though as far as ways to kill yourself went, that did have a certain style - but because she was crazy talented and had been who she'd wanted to be, despite the world telling her to be someone different.
Single mom/lawyer Kate Baron is in the middle of an important meeting at work when gets a call that her daughter - who makes perfect grades, excels in sports and never causes problems - is suspended from school for cheating. Kate rushes to Amelia's school but is even more shocked when she arrives: Amelia has supposedly committed suicide by jumping off the roof of the school building. A month later, while still in the tender stages of grief, Kate receives a text that Amelia didn't really jump. Kate now investigates her daughters death and discovers she may not have really known Amelia at all.
Wow. This book! "Reconstructing Amelia" is a book you won't be able to put down until the very end. I found the characters relatable as well - Amelia is a bookworm with not that many friends, something I'm very familiar with. Kate is an attorney who has to work long hours and feels like a poor parent for not being able to be home more often. However, Kate still manages to find time for her daughter; on her free days she will go on special dates with Amelia, such as getting their nails done or visiting a museum. "Reconstructing Amelia" shows that even though a relationship may not be perfect, all a parent can do is do the best they can do because we're all human. I was surprised that this was McCreight's debut novel. It's a stunning piece of work. I recommend this book to anyone.
