The quiet of the cell is where the real question lingers in the mind of a woman. The one true question, impossible to answer. The why did you. The how. Not the practical how, the other one. How could you have done such a thing. How could you.

Romy Hall is serving two life sentences in prison in Central California. She reflects on her childhood growing up in San Francisco, and the circumstances that led to her incarceration.

Suffice to say The Mars Room is not my cup of tea. I find the book's premise and characters interesting but felt like it was poorly executed. It was difficult for me to finish the novel... at times I felt the writing was dull (specifically in the beginning) and I kept wondering why I was still reading it. Others that enjoy prison fiction may enjoy The Mars Room better than I did.
